Konpeito
is a Japanese candy originally made in Portugal, introduced to Japan around the
15th and 16th centuries by traders from Europe. Its name is derived from the
Portugues word 'confeito,' which means sugar candy. To these traditional candies,
we added high quality maccha produced from tea leaves grown in Kyoto. Please enjoy
the delicate maccha flavour and aroma with these sweet konpeito. It is an excellent
for a tea time snack.
*Please
note :
Because they are handmade, there are slight variations in size and shape.
For
Celebrations... Konpeito
was prepared as a gift given to guests at Princess Nori's (now Sayako Kuroda)
wedding reception. Within the Imperial House of Japan, konpeito is used as gifts
for wedding celebrations. The konpeito is brought into its star-like shape from
small crystals of sugar after two weeks of diligent work by a skilled confectioner.
This may be compared to a marriage maturing with diligent effort.
